The daily player update post as well as some other content will move to a premium content level on Nov. 1, to become a subscriber click Subscribe.

The Core Four – four key updates from Oct 27-28

  1. Saint Louis wing Javonte Perkins tore the ACL in his left knee in an exhibition game Tuesday night and is out for the season. Perkins was the Billikens leading scorer last season with 17.1 ppg and also added 3.9 rebounds a game, starting all 21 games they played. Perkins was second-team all-conference last season and was using his extra season of eligibility.
  2. Syracuse F/C Bourama Sidibe will miss around a month with a knee injury suffered around two weeks ago. He was going to try to return to practice but was then ruled out. This is to the other knee than he dealt with an injury last season, when he was limited to only playing two games. In ’19-20 he started all 32 games averaging 6.0 ppg.
  3. Vanderbilt C Liam Robbins remains limited in practice with a foot injury, but is hopeful to be full-go by the third week of November. Robbins, a Minnesota transfer who averaged 11.7 ppg for the Gophers last season, figures to be the Commodores starting center when healthy, but Quentin Millora-Brown may fill in until Robbins returns.
  4. Florida State‘s Anthony Polite, Cam’Ron Fletcher, & Naheem McLeod did not dress for the Thursday exhibition. Polite was mentioned to have a minor injury (hyperextension) and all three are hopeful to return for the next exhibition. Polite averaged 10.1 ppg last year, Fletcher is a transfer from Kentucky, and McLeod is a 7 foot 4 juco center.

Notable names in the transfer portal included Blake Hinson (Iowa State).

Announcing transfer destinations were Jason Douglas-Stanley (Manhattan to Northwestern Oklahoma State), and Eric Parrish (UTSA to Grambling).

He transferred from Mississippi State where he averaged 5.2 ppg last season, starting 11 games and averaging 16.4 mpg. CBB Player Updates from Oct 21-24

The Core Four – four key updates from Oct 21-24

A note on the scrimmage/exhibition updates included in this post, I’ve not been tweeting many of these scrimmage updates out as “breaking news” because in many cases teams are holding players out as precautions with any sort of minor issue or just resting them altogether. Any more significant issues that are known related to players being held out that may impact the season are noted.

  1. Blake Hinson quit the Iowa State team after a meeting with TJ Otzelberger to discuss his role this season, the Ole Miss transfer was part of the Cyclone program last season but did not play for medical reasons, he averaged 10.1 ppg for Ole Miss in ’19-20. This is an Iowa State team not returning much but with a lot of new transfers, so somewhat of a surprise he apparently didn’t earn a stronger role/place in the rotation.
  2. LSUs Darius Days, Xavier Pinson, Efton Reid and Shareef O’Neal did not scrimmage Saturday, said to be minor injuries (LSU twitter said “minor bumps and bruises), but it is known that O’Neal was recently said to still be working his way back from a stress fracture in his foot last season, when he was limited to ten games
  3. MemphisEmoni Bates (deep thigh bruise), Landers Nolley, Chandler Lawson (not yet cleared after transfer) and Johnathan Lawson all sat out the Sunday exhibition, but Alex Lomax and Malcolm Dandridge started after sitting out an October 13 scrimmage.
  4. Tre King entered the transfer portal again after being dismissed from the Georgetown team recently due to not meeting conduct expectations which also kept him from being enrolled in classes at the school. King had transferred to the Hoyas after averaging 14.9 ppg for Eastern Kentucky last season.

(Injuries & Updates in the first section, Transfers down below.)

Injuries and Updates from Oct 21-24:

  • AlabamaJahvon Quinerly and Juwan Gary were not dressed for Sunday’s scrimmage due to a violation of team rules (they had participated without issue in a Friday tipoff event), they will be available for the season opener. Alex Tchikou also did not play but was said to be available and will be available to play in the opener.
  • Rafael Castro, Providence – freshman forward plans to redshirt this season
  • LJ Cryer, Baylor – is fully cleared for the season after recovering from foot surgery, played in a weekend scrimmage
  • Kyle Cuffe, Kansas – back to practicing full-go (knee)
  • N’Faly Dante, Oregon – still around 4-6 weeks away from return (ACL)
  • Zach Freemantle, Xavier – did not scrimmage Friday (foot)
  • John Fulkerson, Tennessee – is active this fall after June wrist surgery
  • RJ Gunn, Duquesne – Lenoir-Rhyne transfer wing is in a walking boot
  • Blake Hinson, Iowa State – quit the team after a meeting with TJ Otzelberger to discuss his role this season, Ole Miss transfer did not play last season for medical reasons
  • Austin Hutcherson, Illinois – played in the Saturday scrimmage, is full-go this season (back)
  • Tariq Ingraham, Wake Forest – is active this fall after being medically cleared to return in the spring (covid-related), only played two games last season
  • Josiah-Jordan James, Tennessee – is active this fall after April wrist surgery
  • Javan Johnson, DePaul – Iowa State transfer is expected to be eligible in December – 9.7 ppg
  • LSU Darius Days, Xavier Pinson, Efton Reid and Shareef O’Neal did not scrimmage Saturday, said to be minor injuries, but O’Neal was recently said to still be recovering from a stress fracture in his foot
  • MemphisEmoni Bates (thigh bruise), Landers Nolley, Chandler Lawson (not yet cleared after transfer) and Johnathan Lawson all sat out the Sunday exhibition, Alex Lomax and Malcolm Dandridge started after sitting out an October 13 scrimmage
  • Jack Nunge, Xavier – has begun full-contact practice but did not scrimmage Friday (meniscus)
  • Bourama Sidibe, Syracuse – did not scrimmage Friday (knee), wait and see but hopeful short term, had previously been said to be fully cleared
  • Moulaye Sissoko, Dayton – is active this fall after February knee surgery
  • Cole Swider, Syracuse – did not scrimmage Friday (ankle), expected back Tuesday
  • Jacob Toppin, Kentucky – did not scrimmage Friday, still recovering (shoulder)

Transfer Updates from Oct 21-22:

CBB Player Updates from Oct 19-20

The Core Four – four key updates from Oct 19-20

  1. Georgia F PJ Horne suffered a knee injury in practice and had season-ending surgery. Horne averaged 8.5 ppg last season and was one of only two players (Sahvir Wheeler the other) to start all 26 games. He was also the only player in their top eight in minutes per game last season to be returning this year, so a significant loss in both talent and experience.
  2. Kentucky G CJ Fredrick had a surgical procedure on his leg in July and it was shared Wednesday that he has been doing non-contact work since September but has not been cleared for full-contact. Apparently he was going to practice Tuesday but they pushed it back. The Iowa transfer averaged 7.5 ppg last year for the Hawkeyes.
  3. LSU G Adam Miller is expected to miss the season with a knee injury, reportedly a torn ACL. The Illinois transfer started all 31 games last season for the Illini, averaging 8.3 ppg, and was listed by many as being one of the top impact transfers of the offseason. With LSU having lost Javonte Smart and Cam Thomas after last season, Miller figured to be a key starter in the backcourt, likely alongside Missouri transfer Xavier Pinson.
  4. For St John’s, G Julian Champagnie participated in his first full practice on Monday after a late July wrist surgery, but G Dylan Addae-Wusu has not yet practiced as he recovers from an ankle injury. Champagnie led the team in both points (19.8) and rebounds (7.4) last season, while Addae-Wusu averaged 6.5 ppg playing 20.3 minutes per game.

Announcing transfer destinations were Anthony Mason Jr (Florida International to Lane College).

(Injuries & Updates in the first section, Transfers down below.)

Injuries and Updates from Oct 19-20:

  • Dylan Addae-Wusu, St John’s – has not practiced yet, questionable for opener (ankle)
  • Marcus Carr, Texas – the Minnesota transfer has received a waiver to be eligible for the fall, began his career at Pitt
  • Julian Champagnie, St John’s – had his first full practice Monday (wrist surgery)
  • Dylan Disu, Texas – not yet a full practice participant (knee) but still hopeful to start the season
  • Mason Faulkner, Louisville – did not scrimmage Friday, still working way to game speed (ankle)
  • Allen Flanigan, Auburn – looking at a potential mid-December return (Achilles surgery)
  • CJ Fredrick, Kentucky – has not yet been cleared for full contact (leg), has been non-contact since September
  • Zach Freemantle, Xavier – is still in a walking boot
  • PJ Horne, Georgia – is out for the season after surgery for knee injury in practice
  • Puff Johnson, North Carolina – did not scrimmage Friday, still recovering from toe injury from last season
  • Walker Kessler, Auburn – has returned to practice full-speed (concussion)
  • Adam Miller, LSU – is reportedly expected to miss the season after a knee injury, he appeared to confirm the news on social media
  • Brandon Newman, Purdue – was active in the scrimmage last weekend after an ankle issue the end of September
  • Malik Williams, Louisville – is back healthy for the fall (ankle)
  • Wisconsin Lorne Bowman (lower body) and Chucky Hepburn (upper body) were both still out of practice Wednesday but are getting close to returning

Transfer Updates from Oct 19-20:

  • Anthony Mason Jr, Florida International – transfers to Lane College – 3.3 ppg

CBB Player Updates from Oct 15-18

The Core Four – four key updates from Oct 15-18

  1. Georgetown F Tre King, an Eastern Kentucky transfer was announced to have not met conduct expectations and is not enrolled in classes at Georgetown and will not be on the team this season. King averaged 14.9 ppg at EKU, and along with Kaiden Rice (The Citadel) was one of two high profile transfers the Hoyas had brought in this season, and was certainly in line to have been a starter.
  2. Wyoming G Kenny Foster was in a walking boot and did not participate in their Saturday scrimmage. back on October 9th he was reported to have an ankle issue and was in a boot then as well with the report he had “popped an ankle”. I’ve not seen any details on the potential timeline for return, but Foster averaged 9.1 ppg and started 12 of the 17 games he played in last season.
  3. For Wisconsin, C Chris Vogt is practicing and scrimmaged, so the Cincinnati transfer big man appears to be good to go after a May shoulder surgery. The Badgers however had G Lorne Bowman (lower body) and G Chucky Hepburn (upper body) for the Sunday scrimmage with what were described as minor injuries.
  4. UConn F Tyler Polley and G Rahsool Diggins did not participate in the Saturday scrimmage. Polley is dealing with an ankle injury and is a week away from returning, while Diggins has a knee injury and is a week or two away. Polley averaged 7.5 ppg last season, and Diggins is an incoming freshman.

With the season just weeks away there were not any new transfer destinations announced over the past few days, and I doubt we see too many more between now and the start of the season other than perhaps some players who were in the portal who signed with lower level teams and it’s not yet been publicized they are on rosters.

(Injuries & Updates in the first section, Transfers down below.)

Injuries and Updates from Oct 15-18:

  • Lorne Bowman, Wisconsin – did not scrimmage Sunday, lower body, called minor
  • Eli Brooks, Michigan – is in walking boot, called precautionary, not expected to miss any games
  • Rahsool Diggins, UConn – did not scrimmage Friday (knee), a week or two away from returning
  • Kenny Foster, Wyoming – did not scrimmage Saturday (walking boot)
  • Chucky Hepburn, Wisconsin – did not scrimmage Sunday, upper body called minor
  • Chaunce Jenkins, Wichita State – did not scrimmage Saturday, hyperextended his knee in practice
  • Tre King, Georgetown – the Eastern Kentucky transfer (14.9 ppg) did not meet conduct expectations, he is not enrolled in classes and will not be on the team
  • Hunter Maldonado, Wyoming – did not scrimmage Saturday
  • Kevin McCullar, Texas Tech – did not scrimmage Saturday
  • Tyler Polley, UConn – did not scrimmage Friday (ankle), a week away
  • Terrence Shannon, Texas Tech – did not scrimmage Saturday
  • Morris Udeze, Wichita State – did not scrimmage Saturday, shoulder
  • Chris Vogt, Wisconsin – scrimmaged on Saturday (shoulder surgery)

Transfer Updates from Oct 15-18:

  • N/A

CBB Player Updates from Oct 12-14

The Core Four – four key updates from Oct 12-14

  1. Texas F Dylan Disu, a Vanderbilt transfer, has not yet practiced full-contact as he works his way back from February knee surgery. Disu started all 17 games he played last season for the Commodores, averaging 15.0 ppg and 9.2 rebounds.
  2. Xavier F Zach Freemantle was described as week to week and is in a walking boot. He was Xavier’s leading scorer and rebounder last season with 16.9 ppg and 8.9 rpg.
  3. Vanderbilt C Liam Robbins has been sidelined to this point with foot issues, but he is expected to ramp up his activity next week. Robbins, a Minnesota transfer, was the Golden Gophers second leading scorer last season averaging 11.7 points but only played in 23 of their 29 games as he dealt with foot issues near the end of the season.
  4. Butler got two pieces of good news, as Aaron Thompson (shoulder) and Christian David (knee) have both been fully cleared for the season. Thompson averaged 10.4 ppg last season and led the team with 4.7 assists, while David was limited to 1.8 ppg in eleven games.

Notable names in the transfer portal included Cashius McNeilly (Texas A&M, decommit from TCU), and Xavier Foster (Iowa State, dismissed from program).
