CFB Player Updates from May 17-19

The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. Michigan State WR Keon Coleman is transferring to Florida State. Coleman played two seasons with the Spartans, breaking out last season with 58/798-7 receiving, which led the team in all three categories. FSU lost WRs Keyshawn Helton (Cincinnati), Malik McClain (Penn State) & Mycah Pittman (Utah) to the portal this offseason. Johnny Wilson (43/897-5) is the Seminoles leading returner.
  2. Washington WR Taj Davis is staying in conference with a transfer to Cal. Davis caught 26/329-1 in 2021 then dipped slightly last season to 21/277-3, which ranked him 8th on the team in receptions and 6th in receiving yards. Washington is returning their clear top 3 WRs from last season, which likely led to his departure. Cal has also added transfer WRs Brian Hightower (Illinois) and Marquez Dortch (Miss State).
  3. UConn WR Keelan Marion announced he will transfer to BYU, just days after decommitting from a transfer to East Carolina. Marion’s best season came in 2021 when he caught 28/474-5, then was limited by injuries last season catching 4/89-1. BYU also added WR Darius Lassiter (Eastern Michigan) from the portal and got Kody Epps to withdraw from the portal and return for another season.
  4. Auburn RB Jarquez Hunter reportedly has been indefinitely suspended for an undisclosed violation of school policy along with other students (but was not specifically named in a clarification from the school about the statement), allegedly for being seen in an explicit video which was posted to social media. Last season Hunter rushed for 104/668-7 and had 17/224-2 receiving. A lot of moving pieces here, especially with the school backtracking on specifically naming Hunter, but concerns of a suspension involving game time or even worse could be looming as this plays out.

Announcing transfer destinations included QB JaCobian Morgan (Syracuse to Jackson State), RB Victor Venn (Colorado to Liberty), WR Keon Coleman (Michigan State to Florida State), WR Taj Davis (Washington to Cal), WR Keelan Marion (UConn to BYU), WR JaQuae Jackson (Cal U PA to Rutgers) & WR Ty Robinson (Colorado to Ball State)

CFB Player Updates from May 15-16

The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. Former West Virginia RB Tony Mathis is transferring to Houston. Mathis rushed for 222/943-6 over four seasons as a Mountaineer, with over half of that coming in 2022 when he ran for 135/562-5. Mathis figures to compete to replace Alton McCaskill who unexpectedly left Houston for the portal near the end of April after missing last season with a knee injury (more on him in #4).
  2. North Texas WR Jyaire Shorter will transfer to Auburn. Shorter has been at North Texas since the 2018 season, totaling 58/1320-20 over the span, with his best production coming in 2022 when he caught 23/628-11, for a 27.3 average per catch as he caught TDs on almost 50% of his receptions. Auburn has also added WRs Nick Mardner and Caleb Burton from the portal.
  3. Notre Dame RB Logan Diggs is transferring to LSU where he will reunite with Brian Kelly. Diggs was with the Irish for two seasons, rushing for 52/230-3 in 2021 then for 165/822-4 last season as well as 10/211-2 receiving. Last year he led the team in rushing attempts, was second in rushing yards, and was fifth in receiving yards. LSU RB John Emery has some academic issues which sidelined him in the spring, and RBs Josh Williams and Armoni Goodwin have been dealing with injuries – enough collective unknowns that Diggs sees a potential opportunity.
  4. Former Houston RB Alton McCaskill is transferring to Colorado. McCaskill broke out in 2021 with a 189/961-16 rushing campaign as well as 21/113-2 receiving, but then missed all of last season with an ACL injury. Colorado also previously added former Kentucky RB Kavosiey Smoke from the portal, but lost Deion Smith and Jayle Stacks to the portal. McCaskill was limited in the spring but figures to be healthy for the fall and the potential RB1.

Announcing transfer destinations included QB Brady Allen (Purdue to Louisville), QB Tahj Bullock (Virginia Tech to Akron), RB Tony Mathis (West Virginia to Houston), RB Logan Diggs (Notre Dame to LSU), RB Len’Neth Whitehead (Tennessee to Georgia), RB Alton McCaskill (Houston to Colorado), RB Demie Sumo-Karngbaye (NC State to Kentucky), RB Keyvone Lee (Penn State to Miss. State), WR Jyaire Shorter (North Texas to Auburn) & TE Elijah Brown (Alabama to FAU)

  • Brady Allen, Purdue – will transfer to Louisville

  • Devin Farrell, Virginia Tech – will transfer to Rhode Island
  • Mikey Pauley, Nebraska – will transfer to Kansas

RBs:

  • Logan Diggs, Notre Dame – will transfer to LSU
  • Keyvone Lee, Penn State – reportedly has enrolled in classes and transferred to Miss State – 222/1062-6 over 3 seasons
  • Tony Mathis, West Virginia – will transfer to Houston
  • Alton McCaskill, Houston – will transfer to Colorado
  • Demie Sumo-Karngbaye, NC State – will transfer to Kentucky – 55/305-3 rushing last season

  • Keelan Marion, UConn – decommits from transfer to East Carolina
  • Noah Massey, Angelo State – will transfer to West Virginia, began career at Bowling Green

CFB Player Updates from May 12-14

The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. QB TJ Finley announced he would transfer from Auburn to Texas State. Finley began his career with one season at LSU where he passed for 941-5, then spent two seasons at Auburn where he dealt with injuries (only playing in 4 games in 2022), throwing for 1258 yards with 7 TDs and 5 interceptions over the two seasons. Texas State also added Malik Hornsby from Arkansas in the offseason, which sets up an interesting battle of former SEC QBs
  2. Colorado RB Deion Smith will transfer to BYU. Smith spent four seasons at Colorado, totaling 159/653-4 for his career, with his best season coming in 2022 when he ran for 83/393-2 (leading the team in attempts and rushing yards) and caught 11/84-0. BYU has also brought in UNLV RB Aidan Robbins from the portal.
  3. Former USC WR Gary Bryant announced his transfer to Oregon. Bryant took his time committing, as he had been in the portal since early January. Bryant was at USC three seasons, with 2021 his standout campaign as he caught 44/579-7 that year, while only pulling in 9/66-0 in his other two seasons combined. Oregon has also added transfer WRs Tez Johnson and Traeshon Holden from the portal.
  4. Former Marshall WR EJ Horton (12/186-1 last season) flipped his transfer commitment from Colorado to West Virginia. That news in and of itself may not seem that impactful, but is interesting because recently Baylor WR Jaylen Ellis had committed to West Virginia but then flipped to Colorado. So in a convoluted way its like West Virginia and Colorado traded the two WRs for each other. Sticking with Colorado WR news, former Buffalo Chase Sowell is headed to East Carolina from the portal, and they added Javon Antonio from Northwestern State.

Notably announcing transfer destinations included QB TJ Finley (Auburn to Texas State), QB Justin Lamson (Syracuse to Stanford), RB Deion Smith (Colorado to BYU), WR Gary Bryant (USC to Oregon), WR Chase Sowell (Colorado to East Carolina), WR Tyler Harrell (Alabama to Miami), WR Javon Antonio (Northwestern State to Colorado), WR EJ Horton (Marshall to West Virginia), WR Jaelen Gill (Boston College to Fresno State), WR Shemar Kirk (juco to Miami), TE Francis Sherman (Louisville to Arkansas) &TE Kahlil Brantley (Miami to FAU)

CFB Player Updates from May 9-11

The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. Former Georgia WR Dominick Blaylock is transferring to Georgia Tech after four seasons with the Bulldogs. He missed most of 2020 and 2021 due to injuries (2 catches in 2021), but in 2019 caught 18/310-5, then last season pulled in 15/227-1 (seventh on the team in receiving yards), for career totals of 35/548-6. Georgia Tech has also added transfer WRs Chase Lane (Texas A&M) and Christian Leary (Alabama).
  2. Nebraska QB Casey Thompson will transfer to Florida Atlantic and re-unite with former Texas coach Tom Herman. Thompson began his career with three seasons at Texas, starting in 2021 and passing for 2113 yards and 24 TDs. Then he spent last year with Nebraska as the starter, throwing for 2407 yards and 17 TDs, but between missing the spring with a shoulder injury and the Huskers adding Georgia Tech QB Jeff Sims from the portal it looked like an uphill battle to start in the fall for Nebraska, whereas at FAU he should be the favorite over Central Michigan transfer Daniel Richardson.
  3. Colorado WR Jordyn Tyson is transferring to Arizona State. In his one season at Colorado he caught 22/470-4 before his season ended early with a lower leg injury, but he still led the team in receiving yards and receiving TDs despite playing just nine games. Arizona State has added a whole WR unit from the portal this offseason, also including Melquan Stovall, Troy Omeire, Jake Smith and Xavier Guillory.
  4. SMU WR Dylan Goffney will transfer to Colorado State. Goffney spent two seasons with the Mustangs, catching 14/131-0 in 2021 then improving to 18/369-2 last season. The 369 yards actually ranked him fourth on the team last season, but the 18 receptions had him tied for 6th as the team really spread the ball around beyond top options Rashee Rice and Jordan Kerley. SMU added transfer WRs Key’Shawn Smith and Romello Brinson from Miami in the offseason.

Announcing transfer destinations included QB Casey Thompson (Nebraska to FAU), QB Xavier Williams (Charlotte to UCF), WR Dominick Blaylock (Georgia to Georgia Tech), WR Jordyn Tyson (Colorado to Arizona State), WR Keelan Marion (UConn to East Carolina), WR Dylan Goffney (SMU to Colorado State), WR AJ Henning (Michigan to Northwestern), WR Finn Hogan (Central Michigan to Bowling Green), TE Landen King (Auburn to Utah) & TE Micah Hilts (Texas State to SMU)

  • Chayden Peery, College of the Canyons – will transfer to FIU, began career at Georgia Tech
  • Casey Thompson, Nebraska – will transfer to Florida Atlantic
  • Xavier Williams, Charlotte – will transfer to UCF

RBs:

  • Myles Bailey, Central Michigan – was active in spring practice after a fall injury
  • Terion Stewart, Bowling Green – is listed on the 2023 spring roster after sitting out the 2022 season for personal reasons (and not being listed on the 2022 fall roster)

WRs & TEs:

  • Dominick Blaylock, Georgia – will transfer to Georgia Tech
  • Isaiah Davis, UTSA – will transfer to Stephen F Austin
  • Micah Davis, Iowa Western CC – transferred to Utah State, began career at Air Force

CFB Player Updates from May 6-8

The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. WR Mycah Pittman announced a transfer from Florida State to Utah. Pittman started his career out with three seasons at Oregon, catching 38/547-2, then had one year as a Seminole, hauling in 32/330-3, which was his career best for both receptions and receiving yards. Pittman has been out this spring after offseason hip surgery but figures to compete to start for the Utes.
  2. Rice QB TJ McMahon will transfer to Marshall. McMahon was Rice’s starter last season, passing for 160/266-2102-18 with 14 interceptions, but missed some time with injuries and then was supplanted when JT Daniels transferred in from West Virginia. At Marshall McMahon will likely compete with Cam Fancher (last season’s starter) and Cole Pennington.
  3. For the second time in recent weeks a transfer WR flipped his commitment to Colorado. Former Baylor WR Jaylen Ellis (3/154-1 last season) had committed to West Virginia near the end of April but over the weekend changed his commitment to Colorado. Previously former Auburn WR Tar’Varish Dawson (2/30-0 last season) had committed to Cincinnati but then also flipped to Colorado. Colorado is replenishing its depleted roster, but at least so far these recent WR adds (plus EJ Horton from Marshall) don’t appear to be equal to the recently departed/chased-off Jordyn Tyson and Montana Lemonious-Craig.
  4. Former North Texas TE Var’Keyes Gumms had committed to Arkansas, then decommitted to re-open his recruitment (which included a trip to Cal), but announced that he indeed would transfer to Arkansas after all. Gumms caught 34/458-5 at UNT last season, and along with Seydou Traore (who decommitted from Colorado) was one of the top TEs in the portal.

Announcing transfer destinations included QB TJ McMahon (Rice to Marshall), QB Jaylen Henderson (Fresno State to Texas A&M), QB Richard Torres (Nebraska to Incarnate Word), QB Bennett Meredith (Arizona State to Purdue), RB Ajay Allen (Nebraska to Miami), RB David Bailey (Colorado State to Texas A&M), WR Caleb Burton (Ohio State to Auburn), WR Mycah Pittman (Florida State to Utah), WR Jaylen Ellis (Baylor to Colorado) & WR Blair Conwright (TCU to North Texas)

CFB Player Updates from May 3-5

The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. Cincinnati QB Ben Bryant announced he will transfer to Northwestern. Bryant spent three seasons at Cincinnati, went to Eastern Michigan for the 2021 season, then returned to Cincinnati to play in 2022. For his career he has thrown for 6406 yards with 37 TDs and 17 interceptions, while last season he passed for 2732-21 as the starter for Cincy. Arizona State transfer Emory Jones had been competing with Bryant this spring to start for the Bearcats. At Northwestern Bryant will likely compete with Brendan Sullivan.
  2. North Texas QB Grant Gunnell is transferring to Sam Houston, which will be his fourth school. Gunnell started out with two seasons at Arizona, then a year at Memphis where he suffered an injury and never played, then last season at North Texas. He has totaled 1939 passing yards with 15 TDs for his career, but the vast majority of that came with Arizona where he had 1864-15. He’ll likely compete with Keegan Shoemaker to start.

CFB Player Updates from Apr 30-May 2

The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. Michigan State QB Payton Thorne entered the transfer portal. Thorne was the Spartans starter the past two seasons, throwing for 235/389-3232-27 in 2021 then for 242/387-2679-19 last year. This would appear to put Noah Kim and Katin Houser as the top competitors to start in the fall. Michigan State also lost WR Keon Coleman to the portal, Coleman caught 58/798-7 last season, which led the team in all three categories.
  2. BYU WR Kody Epps and West Virginia RB Tony Mathis were two other high-profile players to enter the portal prior to it closing. Epps caught 39/459-6 at BYU last season, which was second on the team in receptions and third in receiving yards. Mathis had been at West Virginia four seasons, with last year being his best as he ran for 135/562-5 which led the team in attempts and rushing yards. But BYU got good news as they landed Eastern Michigan WR Darius Lassiter from the portal, who caught 40/471-4 last year.
