CFB Player Updates from Jul 28-31

The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. Boise State WR Latrell Caples will miss the season with a leg injury. Caples caught 51/549-4 last season, which led the team in receptions by 19 catches (Billy Bowens 32), led the team in receiving yards by 87 yards (Bowens 462), and was tied for the team lead in receiving TDs. Arguably the biggest injury surprise so far in the early preseason.
  2. In Nebraska WR news, Marcus Washington (31/471-1 last season) was observed with his hand in a cast at fan day before practice started, then on Monday it was shared that he had broken a bone in his hand but would be getting the cast off next week and should be able to practice. Baylor transfer Josh Fleeks unfortunately showed up for preseason camp and was sent home to work on his conditioning and get in shape, with no clear timeline for return.
  3. UConn QB Ta’Quan Roberson was full-go to start practice after going down with an ACL injury in week zero in 2022 which knocked him out the rest of the season and limited him in the spring. UConn also returns Zion Turner who passed for 1407 yards and 9 TDs with 10 interceptions and rushed for 90/262-1 after taking over for Roberson.
  4. Utah QB Cameron Rising will be active in fall camp but will start out limited. Rising is expected to increase his load and potentially be full-go at some point during camp, but it’s to be seen if he will be ready for the season opener. Brandon Rose is in the lead for QB2 but will battle Nate Johnson and Bryson Barnes.

Announcing transfer destinations included QB Will Haskell (San Diego State to Washington)

CFB Player Updates from Jul 21-27

The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. Rutgers named QB Gavin Wimsatt the starter heading into preseason, with Evan Simon the backup. Last season Wimsatt passed for 65/145-757-5 with 7 interceptions, while Simon threw for 79/137-777-4 with 6 interceptions. Wimsatt only completed 44.8% of his passes last season as he shared time, and in 2021 he completed just 9/21 (42.9%) with a much smaller sample size, so the room for improvement is clear.
  2. At Utah, QB Cam Rising‘s status is uncertain for the season opener as he seeks to return from offseason knee surgery, with further comments from Rising saying the knee feels “great”. It sounds like he will start out practice limited and see if he can get to full-speed in time to be cleared. In better news, Ute TE Brant Kuithe is expected to be ready for the season as he also returns from a knee injury last season.
  3. In other notable updates, QB Ben Wooldridge (Louisiana) has been cleared, QB Frank Harris (UTSA) is close to 100%, QB Spencer Petras (Iowa) will not play this season, QB Garrett Shrader (Syracuse) sounds good to go, RB Blake Corum (Michigan) is full-go, RB Sam Brown (Rutgers) has been cleared, WR De’Corian Clark (UTSA) is uncertain for the opener, WR Ali Jennings (Virginia Tech) is 100%, WR Chris Autman-Bell (Minnesota) is expected to be cleared, and WR Lance Legendre (Louisiana) has been suspended indefinitely.

  1. Texas State RB Lincoln Pare posted a picture appearing to be post-operation at a hospital with a brace on his leg, with later reports that he had suffered a torn ACL and is likely to miss the season. CFB Player Updates from Jul 1-13

The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. Rice WR Brad Rozner entered the transfer portal as a grad transfer. Rozner had two big seasons at Rice, catching 55/770-5 in 2019, then last season in 2022 putting up 44/876-10 (19.9 average), which led the team in receiving yards and receiving TDs and was second in receptions (Luke McCaffrey had 58/723-6). Rice WR Cedric Patterson was also removed from the roster as he is medically retiring. He was limited by injury last season but in 2021 caught 38/583-6.
  2. Arkansas State TE/WR Seydou Traore will transfer to Mississippi State after previously committing to Colorado and spending time there in the spring then re-entering the portal. Traore spent two seasons at Arkansas State, breaking out in 2022 with 50/655-4. One of the top remaining names in the portal, he had lined up at TE in the past but reports are that he plans to move to WR.
  3. Syracuse RB LeQuint Allen dropped his lawsuit against the school challenging his suspension and will reportedly be eligible to play this season. Additional reports said he could return to the team in mid-August, which makes it sound like he might miss the early portion of preseason practice. Allen rushed for 41/274-1 last season and is widely expected to step into the RB1 role with Sean Tucker having departed.
  4. Northwestern fired coach Pat Fitzgerald in the fallout from hazing allegations in the program, meaning Northwestern players have special allowance to enter the transfer portal within 30 days of the news of the coaching change. However other than some recruits in future classes decommitting there was not an immediate exodus to the portal, and due to the school’s academic standing as well as the very short turnaround to the start of the season it is possible they may not get hit hard. The defensive coordinator David Braun will be the interim head coach. From a fantasy perspective Northwestern’s most high-profile transfer adds this offseason were QB Ben Bryant (Cincinnati), WR Cam Johnson (Arizona State) and WR AJ Henning (Michigan).

Notables entering the transfer portal were Florida QB Jalen Kitna, Rice WR Bradley Rozner

Announcing transfer destinations included RB BJ Harris (Missouri to Central Michigan), RB Darius Boone (Eastern Michigan to Northwestern State), TE Seydou Traore (Arkansas State to Miss. State)

Updates from Jul 1-13:

  • Houston – Texas Tech transfer Donovan Smith was said to currently have the “upper hand” in the QB battle over Lucas Coley, there is no timeline for naming a starter
  • Jalen Kitna, Florida – enters the portal after being dismissed from the team last season, some legal charges were recently dismissed after a plea deal – 10/14-181-1 last season
  • Oklahoma State – the team has not yet named a starter, battle is expected to go into the middle of preseason practice, however several players had praise for Michigan transfer Alan Bowman
  • Evan Prater, Cincinnati – has officially moved to WR
  • DJ Uiagalelei, Oregon State – was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 20th round of the MLB Draft
  • Jay Woolfolk, Virginia – will focus on his baseball career moving forward

  • Darius Boone, Eastern Michigan – will transfer to Northwestern State
  • JJ Branham, Blinn JC – will transfer to Syracuse
  • BJ Harris, Missouri – will transfer to Central Michigan – 30/105-1 over 2 seasons

  • Damir Abdullah, Colorado State – will transfer to Idaho State
  • Chris Autman-Bell, Minnesota – has not been cleared yet (knee) but says he is “almost there”
  • Elijah Bean, Baylor – enters the portal
  • Austin Bolt, Boise State – is expected to be able to participate in fall camp after missing the spring (leg surgery)
  • Joshua Cephus, UTSA – recently booked on a misdemeanor DWI charge and then released, for a crash that happened in December that caused him to be suspended and miss the bowl game, in the spring he was permitted to return to team activities after the suspension but was not active in practice reportedly due to injury
  • Cedric Patterson, Rice – is medically retiring after a spring injury and is no longer listed on the online roster, was at New Mexico two seasons then Rice two seasons (38/583-6 in 2021) but missed most of last year due to injury
  • Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, Georgia – was given six months probation and fined after being arrested on driving charges in May
  • Brad Rozner, Rice – enters the portal – 101/1676-15 since 2019

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. Former Marshall WR Corey Gammage confirmed his transfer to UCF. Gammage had previously committed to Memphis as well as Purdue, but ultimates flipped to UCF. Gammage caught 178/2239-13 over four seasons at Marshall, most recently hauling in 52/774-6 in 2022.

Weimer came to UNLV from the juco ranks, and pulled in 26/278-1 last season, which ranked him fourth on the team in receptions and receiving yards. Wisconsin WR Markus Allen also entered the portal after previously entering and committing to Minnesota but then returning to Wisconsin.
  3. Syracuse RB LeQuint Allen is reported to have been suspended by the school for the summer and fall semesters for an on-campus fight that happened last December and he has chosen to dispute the suspension in court. Last season he rushed for 41/274-1 (6.7 avg) and had 17/117-1 receiving. Those rushing numbers put him second on the team amongst RBs, trailing only lead Sean Tucker (206/1060-11).
  4. Kentucky WR Dekel Crowdus was arrested in Lexington on charges of reckless driving, marijuana possession and DUI. Crowdus redshirted the 2021 season then caught 4/82-0 last season, while receiving praise in the spring and being tabbed by some as a potential breakout for the 2023 season. There has not yet been word on what sanctions could come from the school.

CFB Player Updates from Jun 11-17

The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. Mississippi State WR Rufus Harvey entered the transfer portal. Last season Harvey caught 53/505-3, which led the team in receptions and was second (to Rara Thomas, who transferred to Georgia) in receiving yards. Harvey missed spring practice due to injury but says he has been cleared to play. After just three seasons at Miss. State it appears he may need a waiver since transferring outside of the normal portal window.
  2. Also entering the portal were Utah State RB Jordan Wilmore and Oregon State WR John Dunmore. Wilmore began his career with two seasons at Utah, then spent one season at Fresno State then was at Utah State last season. He has totaled 94/361-2 for his career, with his best season coming in 2019 at Utah with 49/194-1. Dunmore began with a year at Penn State, then was at Oregon State the past two years, catching 9/95-0 last season.
  3. UTEP WR Tyrin Smith is back in El Paso and working out with the team after spending a semester at Texas A&M this spring, but for undisclosed reasons not being active in spring practice. Smith caught 71/1039-7 last season, which led the team in every category, and there were reports mid-spring that he was strongly considering returning to UTEP. UTEP also added RB Aaron Dumas, who began his career with a 136/658-2 season at New Mexico in 2021, then transferred to Washington last season where he did not record a carry.
  4. June tends to be one of the slowest months of the year, which means I usually spend some time digging for unreported/underreported updates, so some of the content you see in the lists below may have happened earlier in the spring but is being shared now. While the expectation is everything is accurate, sometimes sources for updates are as simple as a player changing their social media bio to a new school (such as QB Matthew Downing apparently transferring to Elon).

Notables entering the transfer portal were RB Jordan Wilmore (Utah State), WR John Dunmore (Oregon State) & WR Rufus Harvey (Miss. State)

Announcing transfer destinations included RB Aaron Dumas (UTEP to Washington), WR Dominic Gicinto (New Mexico State to UNLV), WR Jermaine Johnson (UMass to Duquesne), WR Chase Smith (Eastern Michigan to Coastal Carolina), WR Victor Snow (Nevada to Buffalo) & TE Shawn Bowman (Maine to Rutgers)

CFB Player Updates from Jun 3-10

The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. UTSA WR Zakhari Franklin is transferring to Ole Miss. Franklin caught 262/3348-37 over four seasons with the Roadrunners, eclipsing the 1000 yard mark the past two seasons, with his best year coming in 2022 when he had 94/1136-15, which led the team in all three categories. Ole Miss also added WR Tre Harris (Louisiana Tech) from the portal this offseason, as well as Chris Marshall from Texas A&M who was subsequently dismissed from the team in early May.
  2. Texas Tech QB Tyler Shough has been named the starter going into the fall. Last year Shough missed time due to injury, passing for 106/177-1310-7. Also getting time at QB last season for the Red Raiders were Donovan Smith (1505-12, since transferred to Houston) and Behren Morton (1117-7), who should be the top backup behind Shough and perhaps even likely to see time with Shough’s injury history (also limited to 4 games in 2021).
  3. Former Marshall WR Corey Gammage has reportedly flipped his transfer commitment from Purdue to UCF. Gammage initially this offseason announced a commitment to Memphis but never signed, then announced a commitment to Purdue, but recent reports were that he had re-entered the portal yet again this week as a grad transfer and is potentially headed to UCF (he has not confirmed this report). Gammage was at Marshall four seasons, totaling 178/2239-13, with his best season coming in 2021 with 78/869-2.
  4. LSU RB Tre Bradford is back on the online roster as he appears to be back with the team for a “third” time. He initially signed with LSU prior to the 2020 season, rushing for 10/58-0. But he then transferred to Oklahoma in the summer of 2021 for just a couple months before returning to LSU to play that season, in 2021 running for just 2/11-0. He then stepped away from the program for the 2022 season for undisclosed reasons. Curious path to say the least, and perhaps most surprising is that he resurfaced again at LSU instead of a fresh start somewhere else (unless a waiver for transferring again may have been an obstacle).

Notables entering the transfer portal were RB Jevon Bigelow (Fresno State)

Announcing transfer destinations included RB Sy’Veon Wilkerson (Jackson State to Colorado), WR Zakhari Franklin (UTSA to Ole Miss), WR Corey Gammage (Marshall to UCF, expected), WR James Burns (Austin Peay to UConn)

  • Tyler Shough, Texas Tech – was named the starter going into the season

CFB Player Updates from May 23-26

The player update post contains the biggest recent player news and does not currently require a CFU subscription.

The Core Four: four key updates

  1. Former Tennessee & UNLV QB Harrison Bailey will transfer to Louisville. Bailey was with the Volunteers for two seasons, seeing the most action in 2020 when he passed for 48/68-578-4, then in 2022 with ULNV he threw for 30/58-318-2. He is the third incoming transfer QB for Louisville, who has also added Jack Plummer (Cal) and Brady Allen (Purdue), plus converted QB Joey Gatewood (UCF).
  2. WR Mikel Barkley is transferring to Fresno State. Barkley started out his career with two years at TCU where he caught 8/81-0, then last year with Toledo he improved to 22/289-3, which was fifth on the team in receptions and receiving yards. Fresno State also recently added WR Jaelen Gill (Boston College), but lost WR Josh Kelly to Washington State.
  3. Florida WR Xzavier Henderson shared on social media he is transferring to Cincinnati. Over three seasons with the Gators he pulled in 73/835-5, with his best season coming in 2022 when he caught 38/410-2, with the 38 receptions leading the team. The Bearcats have overhauled their receiving corps through the portal, also adding Donovan Ollie, Keyshawn Helton, Dee Wiggins, Aaron Turner, Braden Smith and Sterling Berkhalter. The move re-unites Henderson with former Gator QB Emory Jones.
  4. Two of the most notable experienced RBs in the portal found new homes with Devyn Ford going from Penn State to Notre Dame and Shedro Louis heading from Liberty to Tulane. Ford rushed for 140/666-6 over four seasons, but only 21/98-0 of that came over the past two seasons. Louis compiled 263/1399-15 rushing and 36/364-2 receiving over four seasons, totaling over 600 yards from scrimmage each of the past two seasons. Former Liberty RB Dae Dae Hunter is likely the top RB left in the portal, but it sounds like he would need a waiver to be instantly eligible after beginning his career with two seasons at Hawaii then playing one year at Liberty.

Announcing transfer destinations included QB Bishop Davenport (Utah State to South Alabama), QB Harrison Bailey (UNLV to Louisville), QB Jacob Knuth (Minnesota to Kansas State), RB Shedro Louis (Liberty to Tulane), RB Devyn Ford (Penn State to Notre Dame), RB Dontae McMillan (Weber State to Eastern Michigan), Mikel Barkley (Toledo to Fresno State), WR Jaden Dottin (Penn State to Toledo), WR Xzavier Henderson (Florida to Cincinnati) & WR Alante Brown (Nebraska to Michigan State)
