CFB Player Updates – Thur-Fri. Aug 5-6

A note to share with most teams having started fall practice or starting very soon, but games still 4-5 weeks away – early on in fall if a player misses a practice (especially if there is no reason given as it may be something very minor or covid-related) I do not too highly focus on those absences, but you can find some of those notes below. As we get closer to the season and missed practices could potentially impact game-participation I will be more likely to highlight those absences.

In the biggest QB updates, D’Eriq King (Miami) was active and appeared full-speed as practice started, Jabari Laws (Army) is healthy after missing last season, and Dylan Morris (Washington) was called the starter.

In RB news, Kevin Harris (South Carolina) had a minor back procedure that he has not been fully cleared from but is expected to be ready for the season, John Emery (LSU) was active in practice after offseason shoulder surgery, and Israel Abanikanda (Pitt) was described as RB1 going into the fall.

In WR & TE updates, Justyn Ross (Clemson) has officially been cleared but is out for a week due to covid protocols, Erik Ezukanma (Texas Tech) and Troy Omeire (Texas) are full-go for the fall, JJ Holloman was not able to transfer from Fla International to Liberty, and TE Jalen Wydermyer (Texas A&M) is active after offseason finger surgery. Jake Smith (USC) will have his foot evaluated and may need surgery.

Notables entering the transfer portal were TE Daniel Moraga (Pitt).

Announcing transfer destinations were WR Mekhi Stevenson (UNLV to Idaho), RB/DB Devan Barrett (Auburn to Troy), RB/FB Clay Markoff (Washington State to Arizona), WR Charles Njoku (UCLA to Nevada), & TE Evidence Njoku (UCLA to Nevada).

Also of note according to SunDevilSource.com is that Arizona State will not travel players this season who have not been vaccinated, which could potentially lead to some unexpected absences, although word is that nearly all of ASU’s scholarship players are vaccinated. Reports are that the policy may have led top punter Michael Turk to enter the transfer portal. I haven’t seen much reporting on whether other programs may have similar policies, but something to look out for.

Updates from Aug 5-6:

QBs:

  • Cade Fortin, South Florida – very early in camp was taking first team reps, with Jarren Williams next
  • Jacob Free, Troy – participated in spring practice but decided to take a high school coaching job so is not back this fall
  • Tristan Gebbia, Oregon State – not yet 100% but working way back (hamstring), at media days said he was expected to be healthy by the start of fall camp, so either way he sounds close
  • Connor Genal, New Mexico – is at fall practice after wrist surgery the end of last season

  • D’Eriq King, Miami – was active and practicing to start fall (knee)

CFB Player Updates – Mon-Wed. Aug 2-4

A note to share with most teams having started fall practice or starting very soon, but with games still 4-5 weeks away – early on in fall I won’t necessarily share every time a player misses a practice (especially if there is no reason given as it may be something very minor or covid-related), but you can find some of those notes below. As we get closer to the season and missed practices could potentially impact game-participation I will be more likely to share those absences.

In the biggest QB updates, Myles Brennan (LSU) is out indefinitely after having surgery for a broken bone in his left arm, Quinn Ewers (Ohio State) will enroll early and skip his senior year of high school, Tevaka Tuioti (New Mexico) sounds like his career is over due to concussions, Justin Tomlin (Georgia Southern) is ineligible the first two games this season, and Bailey Zappe (Western Kentucky) is QB1.

In RB news, Bentavious Thompson (UCF) is no longer with the program, Markese Stepp (Nebraska) appears to be 100% after foot surgery, & Tayvon Ruley (Temple) is healthy for the fall.

In WR & TE updates, Bru McCoy (USC) has been removed from the team after being arrested, Reggie Roberson (SMU) is healthy going into the fall after a knee injury last season, & Jamarye Joiner (Arizona) is targeting a week 3 or 4 return.

Announcing transfer destinations were QB Andrew Brito (UMass to UCF as a walk-on).

Updates from Aug 2-4:

QBs:

  • Seth Boomer, Tulsa – is dealing with a recent injury (undisclosed), suffered a knee injury last December
  • Myles Brennan, LSU – had surgery on Tuesday (“surgery went really well” he tweeted) for a broken bone in his left arm, he has a metal plate and screws for a compound fracture, since it is his left arm he may be able to begin throwing in a couple weeks but he is out indefinitely, Max Johnson will be the starter
  • Andrew Brito, UMass – transfers to UCF as a walk-on, reports in the spring previously had him transferring to St Francis (PA)
  • Quinn Ewers, Ohio State – top recruit will skip his senior season of high school in Texas and enroll early at Ohio State

  • Tevaka Tuioti, New Mexico – was not cleared for fall camp due to numerous concussions, will become a student assistant coach, was their second leading passer last season

  • Markese Stepp, Nebraska – appears back to 100% in practice (foot)
  • Bentavious Thompson, UCF – no longer listed on the official team roster, confirmed to no longer be with the team – 73/382-5

WRs & TEs:

  • Izayah Cummings, Kentucky – WR is moving to TE this season, perhaps a response to Keaton Upshaw’s injury

  • Emeka Emezie, NC State – did not practice on Wednesday, was present for part
  • Donavon Greene, Wake Forest – clarification that his season-ending offseason injury happened running routes, so sounds like it may have been lower body

CBB Player Updates from Mon-Tues. July 26-27

Many of the player updates early in the week centered around transfers being eligible this upcoming season, (many of which were two-time transfers and/or grad transfers, credit to Jon Rothstein for sharing most of them). That said, between the new one-time free transfer rules and the ease with which waivers have been given to transfers (first-time & multiple-time) and grad transfers in recent seasons, it appears the general expectation this season will be that players who announce transfers will be granted waivers for eligibility.

While it is helpful to have confirmation of transfer eligibility, I don’t really see that as “breaking news” unless there has been a complicating factor around the transfer creating concern about their eligibility. So as a general rule I likely won’t tweet out transfer waiver eligibility approvals unless the climate shifts, but you can see a list of those whose transfer eligibility was recently confirmed in the update section below.

Some of those announcing transfer destinations were Kevin Osawe (Western Kentucky to Little Rock) & Talin Lewis (USC to Corban University).

CFB Player Updates – Week of July 12-18

In coaching news, Ohio coach Frank Solich unexpectedly retired on Wednesday for health reasons after being at Ohio since 2005, Offensive Coordinator Tim Albin agreed to a four-year contract as the new coach.

In QB updates, Skylar Thompson (Kansas State) is healthy for the start of the season, and an early preseason Baylor depth chart had a 3-way OR at QB with Gerry Bohanon, Jacob Zeno & Blake Shapen all in the mix.

In RB news, SaRodorick Thompson is “cautiously optimistic” to be ready for the season opener as he rehabs from injury, but more will be known in mid-August. Same update about “cautiously optimistic” for Texas Tech teammate WR Erik Ezukanma, who I previously shared back in mid-June had resumed catching balls.

In WR & TE updates, JJ Holloman will transfer to Liberty after stints at FIU and Georgia, Kaylon Geiger is expected to line up at outside receiver for Texas Tech, Chabastin Taylor (Kansas State) should be back to full-speed in August after a torn ACL.

Notables entering the transfer portal were QB Cade Fennegan (Boise State), & WR Mike Wyman (South Carolina).

Notables announcing transfer destinations were QB Kaidon Salter (Tennessee to Liberty) & WR JJ Holloman (FIU to Liberty).
