CFB Player Updates – Sun. Aug 15

The Core Four: four key updates from Sunday

  1. QB Quinn Ewers (Ohio State) officially enrolled in school and is a member of the football program after the top recruit left his Texas high school a year early. Ewers may be a huge talent, but he’s competing with CJ Stroud, Kyle McCord and Jack Miller, and would seem to have a major learning curve to the practice reps they all have already gotten. It will be really interesting to see if/when he takes the field this season based upon the decision he made to enroll early, and whether it turns out to primarily be a NIL play.
  2. Boise State QB Jack Sears returned to practice at the start of the week after what was described as a minor leg strain but then had a setback that led him to miss the Saturday scrimmage. He is expected back hopefully by the middle of this week. Boise State coach Andy Avalos said fellow QB Hank Bachmeier and Sears had been pretty close prior to Sears’ injury, but that Bachmeier graded out well in the scrimmage, so the question is how much the missed time has set Sears back in the QB battle.
  3. Kentucky QB Will Levis has been named the starter for the season opener, beating out Joey Gatewood and Beau Allen. Gatewood, a former Auburn transfer, attempted 35 passes last season as Terry Wilson’s backup, while Allen got mop-up duty with 7 passes thrown in 2020. Will Levis transferred after two seasons backing up Sean Clifford at Penn State where he actually had more rushing attempts (133/473 yards) than passing attempts (102/644 yards), so he brings mobility as well. Naming a starter earlier than expected should allow Levis to maximize his starting practice reps.
  4. Kentucky QB Joey Gatewood is expected to enter the transfer portal after not winning the starting QB role going into the season. Gatewood had 109 yards passing and 62 yards rushing in 2020, he played for Auburn in 2018 and 2019 before transferring to Kentucky. Gatewood has to make a decision about the portal before continuing to practice with Kentucky.

Sunday is usually a quieter day, but some updates from the Saturday scrimmages continued to be shared, with Oregon especially dealing with a number of injured/limited players.

In WR & TE updates, Oregon WRs Jaylon Redd and Devon Williams were both present for the Saturday scrimmage, but both were held out due to injuries. Texas A&M’s Demond Demas has not practiced fully yet, while teammate Caleb Chapman is fully participating but in a non-contact jersey. Ma’jon Wright (Arizona) was at the scrimmage but not in uniform, perhaps making progress after an almost-transfer to MTSU.

Notables entering the transfer portal were QB Joey Gatewood (Kentucky, expected) and TE Landon Morris (Syracuse).

Updates from Aug 15:

QBs:

  • Quinn Ewers, Ohio State – the top recruit has officially enrolled in classes and is a member of the Ohio State football program
  • Joey Gatewood, Kentucky – is expected to enter the transfer portal after not winning the starting QB job, began his career at Auburn
  • D’Eriq King, Miami – played in Sunday scrimmage – 12/16-124-2
  • Blake Kirshner, UCLA – former walk-on transfers to Trinity Valley CC
  • Will Levis, Kentucky – Penn State transfer named the starter for the season opener, beating out Joey Greenwood and Beau Allen
  • Jack Sears, Boise State – returned to practice early last week from what was called a minor strain but had a setback with a lower leg injury and missed the scrimmage, hopeful to return middle of this week

RBs:

  • Trey Benson, Oregon – did not take part in scrimmage as he works back to 100% (knee), recent reports are that he is close
  • Sean Dollars, Oregon – did not take part in scrimmage as expected, but was in full pads for the first time this fall (leg)

WRs & TEs:

  • Caleb Chapman, Texas A&M – has been practicing in a non-contact jersey but is running all routes and taking full reps, being eased back into contact
  • Colorado – TEs Brady Russell and Matt Lynch did not play in the scrimmage
  • TE Baylor Cupp, Texas A&M – expected back in a couple days, has recently been limited to sideline work
  • Demond Demas, Texas A&M – “progressing well” as he recovers from a foot injury that has limited him to sideline work, has not practiced yet this fall
  • Jacolby George, Miami – 7/127-1 receiving in the Sunday night scrimmage
  • TE Patrick Herbert, Oregon – appeared to suffer an injury, did not finish the scrimmage
  • TE DJ Johnson, Oregon – after being absent for the start of fall practice he was on the sideline for the Saturday scrimmage, which appears to be a step in the right direction – 10/113-3
  • TE Landon Morris, Syracuse – freshman enters the transfer portal
  • Jaylon Redd, Oregon – present at Saturday scrimmage but did not play (injury) – 25/281-1
  • JD Spielman, TCU – is back this fall after missing most of last season due to injury
  • Devon Williams, Oregon – present at Saturday scrimmage but did not play (injury) – 15/286-2
  • Ma’jon Wright, Arizona – present Sunday night watching the scrimmage, not in uniform, has not practiced yet this fall, may be an eligibility issue after almost transferring to MTSU – 15/176-1
